One of the problems with being immortal is you get to live through all of history's most famous blunders. Like Napoleon's inspired idea for a land war in Asia.
This Sean Danet short story, a prequel to the entertaining and popular urban fantasy “Out of Nowhere,” sees our immortal hero before he became a paramedic in the Boston area. Some 200 years earlier he has hidden himself in plain sight in the ranks of Napoleon’s army. A plan that has landed him in the infamous 'advance on Paris'... stumbling backwards from the smouldering ruins of Moscow with his musket frozen to unfeeling hands and only hunger keeping him awake as the Cossacks swoop down from the unforgiving countryside to slash at the column's flanks and cut down stragglers.
A glorious historical snippet, this action adventure story also lets us glimpse further into the painful dilemma of Danet's life... can he afford to love, or belong? Can he ever use his gift without destroying the trust of all those he cares about?
Patrick LeClerc takes all the sharp wit, wry humor and intelligence of his urban fantasy back in time. Wounded and cut off from the rest of the army, our hero must rely on quick thinking, fast reflexes, natural charm and poorly accented Russian to survive a brutal winter in a hostile country.
Either that, or face a long, cold, lonely walk home.
If you love historical military fiction, action and adventure, or just one of the sexiest urban fantasy heroes of all, Advancing on Paris is a must.

I love theses books. This is really more of a short story but adds another dimension to the story of the immortal.. I'd read both of the full length novels before this one. The entire concept of races of people with super powers who have interacted for thousands of years and who live among us, in some instances, wanting nothing more than just to fit in. The things most of us take for granted-a home, family, friends who we can share experiences with are hard when you have to keep your secret because there are those who want to use your gift of immortality for their own evil purposes. Add to that you are also a healer who can bring an injured or ill person back from the edge of death, healed with no sign of the trauma. Through the centuries he finds work that allows him to remain as anonymous as possible while finding companionship. Much of his life is spent in military work-in the current time he is an EMT with a second rate ambulance service which allows him to have close contact with coworkers and carefully use a bit of his healing and still stay under the radar. But I'm getting ahead. This book is set in the past but shows how he struggles with peoples fear when they see what her can do even if he saves them. I want more of these books. Advancing on Paris The Immortal Vagabond Healer Short Historical Adventures Book 1 edition by Patrick LeClerc Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a fine read. There's a lot to choose from when shopping for books these days, and this story convinced me to consider Leclerc's work from now on.
Although short, this was a great story set during the Napoleonic war. I look forward to the next full length book in the healer's adventures.
My only frustration with this short story is that its so darned SHORT- I hate short stories but I love the storyline- darn it Patrick stop drinking bourbon and get to work. If this a teaser it worked!!!!!!!!!
I have to admit I would have liked more but this was a good intro to Patrick's sequel. The protagonist is a compelling and likeable guy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's faithful to the tone, pacing and overall "feel" of the first book this character appears in (Out of Nowhere)...If you liked the book, this little addition will be worth the price.
LeClerc is a really talented writer. If you haven't read Out of Nowhere, go download it now. It's great. This short story is more of a prequel or prologue to the longer book and enjoyable whether you read the other book or not. I look forward to more of LeClerc’s writings. You should buy this book.
I've read two of LeClerc's other books and enjoyed them both. One of those books was the first book in this series.
I enjoyed this short story more than the four star review probably warrants. My sole complaint stems from the fact that this is a short story and should have been titled as such rather than as book two in the series. The fine print noted that this story is only around 28 printed pages. I didn't notice that fact before I bought the story. To be honest, I would have still bought it but I would just be a little more pleased if I had not expected a full length book.
